Advocacy in Action: How HBRAMA Made Major Strides for Housing in 2024
The Home Builders and Remodelers Association of Massachusetts (HBRAMA) had one of its most impactful years yet in 2024, leading the charge on housing advocacy and regulatory reform that directly benefits the building industry and communities across the state. These efforts were made possible in large part thanks to member engagement and support through the Dollars for Change program.
A Year of Legislative Wins
Here’s a look at what HBRAMA accomplished in 2024:
✅ Developed a strong working relationship with the Healey-Driscoll administration
✅ Secured appointments to key housing and energy commissions
✅ Re-established their Utilities Working Group with the Department of Public Utilities
✅ Played a major role in passing the historic Affordable Homes Act
✅ Authored a key provision to unmerge previously merged lots
✅ Advocated for ADUs by right across Massachusetts communities
✅ Supported zoning reforms to curb frivolous abutter appeals
✅ Defeated efforts to introduce rent control and tenant right of first refusal
✅ Blocked the imposition of a local transfer tax
✅ Protected builders by defeating proposed mandatory fire sprinklers in 1- and 2-family homes
✅ Authored a bill establishing a uniform, statewide 3-year special permit term
✅ Defended the MBTA Communities Act in court briefings
✅ Worked to clarify regulations in the State Building Code and Stretch Energy Code
✅ Submitted impactful feedback on ADU regulations, influencing final policy
These victories represent critical steps toward improving housing affordability, streamlining regulation, and defending the rights of builders and developers across the Commonwealth.
